thursday’s thought

Tim Walker - f. Portfolio Nr. 43

I came across this quote at work the other day and, after I burst out laughing, thought how completely true it was.

I blame Disney for my previous unrealistic life expectations.

But seriously, how often do we thumb through magazines, or browse online articles, that tell us how to achieve that perfect relationship, job, six-pack, bouffant hair, blah, blah. blah.

Nor do I want to be. Life is definitely not a fairy tale because, really, how boring.

Imperfection, unpredictability, challenge, love, heartache, are the stuff that make your life worth living. And remembering.

All of us are diamonds. None of us will break. So don’t be afraid to accept that fairy tales don’t exist because life’s real tale is so much better.

  • This is another lovely post! I think we’ve all been guilty at some point of over idealizing and romanticizing. I’ve realized that by setting high expectations, you’re also setting yourself up for disappointment.

    • Thanks Megan! I love that you read my Thursday’s Thought every week 🙂 Hope you’ve been having a great week so far! xo

Yes, Disney loves to take the real fairy tales (Grimm’s) and make them too saccharine. Grimm’s tales were more parables than fairy tales. There was always a lesson in them. But Disney loses the lessons.

    • So true! All of the “fairy tales” were quite dark and twisted until Disney romanticized them. Stark reality and unfortunately the valuable life lessons were lost once they made it to the big screen. Thanks for sharing!! xx

  • Ha! I’ve been saying that for ages about Disney stories setting us up for a high divorce rate! Another post that I read a while ago came from a mom who refused to let her kids watch the Disney Channel because she saw her kind daughter turning into a witch. You phrased this so well: really, how boring indeed, not to mention completely false. Though, I wouldn’t mind learning a thing or two from seven dwarves who sing their way to and from work. Now there’s an achievement! Great post, Lovely! Xo

    • Haha I think perhaps those dwarves drank some happy juice before heading off to work 😉 But if they’re indeed just high on life then I too want to know the secret!

I have a friend who’s daughter is 5 and since day 1 she wouldn’t let her play with barbies or watch Disney movies. She’s teaching her the value of using her brain and that she doesn’t need a prince to ‘save’ her. Now THAT is a life lesson every little girl should learn.

Hope you’re having a great week Sarita!! xo
