Travelling to Croatia this month had me excited for three reasons: the seafood, the beaches and their infamous lavender.
I’m going to nerd out for a moment so if history isn’t your jam jump down to the next paragraph. Lavender comes from the Latin verb lavare, meaning to cleanse, and its use dates back over 2,500 years. Ancient Egyptians used it for perfume and mummification; Romans used it for bathing, cooking, to relax and repel bugs; by the 1600’s lavender made it’s way into commercial production with royals such as Queen Elizabeth I and Louis XIV indulging in lavender tea and lavender scented baths, respectively. However, it was Queen Victoria who brought lavender to the forefront as a perfume for fashionable English ladies.
Lavender is considered one of the most versatile essential oil – it can heal wounds and burns; its antiseptic component means it can fight infection, fight pain, and reduce scarring; it can help lull you to sleep, ease stress and relive congestion and headaches. Due to its natural organic chemistry, high quality soil and temperate climate, Croatia is famous for having the finest grade lavender oil.
The scent of Croatian lavender is much softer than anything I’ve smelled before and elicits such a sense of ultimate relaxation. There are countless ways to use this oil, including adding it to your bath, shampoo, facial cream, and in the final rinse of your laundry for a lasting scent, but being the creative person I am I’m pretty excited to try and find new ways to use it.
Are you a fan of lavender? How do you like to use it?
