{review} natural deodorants by osmia organics, living libations and greenbody

life in blush natural deodorant review

My morning ritual, after finally convincing myself that snoozing for the 10th time is probably going to make me very late for work, always ends with a swipe of deodorant under my arms before dashing out the door (and then inevitably dashing back in because I’ve forgotten something). Turning my nose up at mainstream brand deodorants long ago I’ve been on a quest ever since to find a non-toxic deodorant that would keep my natural scent in check throughout the day.

And why have I turned my nose up? Well, The Journal of Applied Toxicology reported in their article “Underarm cosmetics and breast cancer,” that there are “…unexplained clinical observations showing a disproportionately high incidence of breast cancer in the upper outer quadrant of the breast, just the local area to which these cosmetics [deodorants/antiperspirants] are applied.”

Ok, settle in blushers there’s about to be a quick biology / history lesson:

emma-stoneNot that one thinks about this in the run of their day, but your armpit is actually an organ that contains lymph nodes and glands. So intoxicating were one’s individual scents that Victorian women would hold peeled apples in their armpits until covered in sweat, and then wrap ribbons around the apples and give them to their gentleman callers (p.s. I would love to hear someone nowadays call their date a “gentleman caller”). Young guys would also tuck kerchiefs under their arms and then wave them in the air when ladies passed by…I think if a guy did that today it would warrant an immediate text to your friends about the weirdo you passed on your way to work.

As a final (and romantic?) testament to the power of our scent, Napoleon Bonaparte would beg Josephine not to bathe for three days (again could you imagine a guy asking you to do that today?) so he could bask in her natural aroma.

So, based on all of this, are we now over-sensitized about covering up our natural scent when we should be celebrating it? After all, unpleasant odors are only omitted when you’re feeling frightened. Clearly this is food for thought for another time – on to my review!

osmia organics: this one actually didn’t work for me, and resulted in an odd scent, but just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t it mean it won’t work with someone else’s body chemistry. The ingredients are stellar and I know several other bloggers who rave about it. I will say however, that I don’t think it would hold up if you’re at the gym.

living libations: this was an interesting one because at the end of the day you could clearly smell the aroma of lavender and sandalwood  (note: if you don’t LOVE lavender then best to choose one of their other options), but also your own unique scent. I used to go crazy rolling this on  before dashing out the door, but the lavender literally punched me in the face, so I’ve since calmed down and realized I only need two small swipes to be effective. And it is really effective. And you know what else? I even don’t mind that my scent lingers – it’s like having my own calling card.

greenbody: this one surprised me! It’s a cream formula and after my experience with osmia I thought creams weren’t for me, but both options exceeded my expectations. Each one kept me feeling clean and fresh and left a very delicate trace of the formula’s main aroma. My favourite was ‘clarity scent’ as I loved the hint of jasmine that followed me around. Plus the price makes it quite the steal!

Sample of greenbody generously provided, but you know the drill all opinions blushing or not are my own.

  • haha, I love your GIFs, lady! 😀
by the way, I’m a happy user of a local german brand’s deo, and once they ran out of stock and I panicked and ordered too many… so I keep giving them away to friends 🙂 they must think they stink, mwahaha. *being silly today*

    • lifeinblush

      haha! what’s the brand?

  • Jade

Love it! When I first started using the Osmia, I thought it wasn’t working for me and felt smelly, so I put it away, but I took it back out this week and haven’t stunk yet. Hopefully the same might happen with you 😀

    • lifeinblush

ah that’s awesome to hear! I tested it for a few weeks without the results I was hoping for, but perhaps I’ll try it once more 🙂

  • Great post Sonja! 🙂 I believe deodorant is one of the most important of our daily care products to buy toxic free so thanks for sharing all the info!

    • lifeinblush

absolutely! I’m so excited that you’re carrying the Living Libations line – so many of their products are absolute staples in my beauty bag 🙂

  • Jacqs Organics

I just enjoy the tone in your blog. The information on Victorian apple deodorant is definitely is an interesting take on natural deodorant. Quite interesting… But I know of cultures today that still consider body odor as an attractive trait to the opposite sex. But I prefer a man that doesn’t have a smell of BO. Great post.

    • lifeinblush

ahh thanks! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t enjoy being around a sexy guy who’s got a BO issue…I much prefer a natural manly, musky scent that comes from a healthy lifestyle. Aaaannd now you’ve got me thinking about sexy men 😉

  • Mademoiselle nature

Nice article ! I am actually trialling 2 deodorants and hope to post a review soon! x

    • lifeinblush

ooh can’t wait to read which ones you’re trying!

  • Margie

Such an interesting, fun article on the importance of using non toxic deodorant (breast cancer tumors have a high concentration of parabens, one of the many synthetic chemicals in deodorant, as well as in many other personal care products…going green never looked better, ladies!) These 3 deodorant reviews make it easy to do just that!

    • lifeinblush

      I’ll cheers to that! xo
