{review} kaia bamboo tapioca beads exfoliating powder

kaia tapioca beads cleansing powder

kaia naturals is an indie skincare company from Toronto that first started out with a cleansing cloth made from unbleached bamboo (click here for my review) and then tackled a daily exfoliating powderย that was 100% natural, cruelty-free, paraben-free, gluten-free and vegan.

Exfoliating dead skin cells is an age-old tradition and based on the rich Indian practice of ubtan, the natural Ayurveda version of microdermabrasion.

Already a fan of their easy-breezy cleansing cloths I was excited to take this white powder out for a whirl and see what it could do for me (mum if you’re reading, there’s no concern about exactly what ‘white’ powder I’m into).

scorecard

ingredients: kaolin (white clay). tapioca root starch, coconut fatty acid, chick pea powder, bambusa arundicacea steam extract (bamboo), citrus tangerina, citrus grandis, citrus nobilis, silica

how to use it: as a cleanser, exfoliator or mask, mix 1/4 tsp with either water, or an oil like avocado, almond, coconut, rosehip or my preference grapeseed. You can also mix it with rosewater, ginger tea, green tea, blood orange juice or plain yoghurt (if you’re using it as a mask).

tip: you’ll want to mix enough oil or water with the powder so that you’re not left with a paste, but rather a runny consistency. Why? I found this decreased the intense ‘scrubbing’ feeling to that of a soft, gentle buff.

happy endings

performance: the exfoliating powder promises to “exfoliate and maintain healthy skin tissue; purge skin of impurities, absorb oil, tighten pores, be gentle enough for rosacea or eczema”…so does it?

It sure does.

I tried mixing it with plain old water, rosewater and a variety of oils like avocado and grapeseed and my preference, now that the seasons are changing and I can notice a drier texture to my skin, is to mix it with an oil for a boost of hydration.

As I said you can definitely feel the ‘scrubbing’ action, which after it’s washed off did in fact leave my skin feeling baby-bum soft, but I think this may be a tad too aggressive for people with really sensitive skin or rosacea.

price: $30 1.5oz / 43g

ooooohh those sweet puppies!!! Using only 1/4 tsp each time makes this a very cost effective exfoliator! Love the list of mixing options…
