{reivew} ilia beauty & kari gran concealers

Ilia Beauty and Kari Gran concealers I sometimes find myself staring at my four year old niece with envy that the area under her eyes are the same colour as the rest of her face; not yet marked with dark tell-tale signs of lack of sleep or an insufficient diet.

arrested development Is it wrong to be jealous of your niece?

One day I’ll discover I have deep rooted magical powers that’ll allow me to erase the darkness altogether, but until then I’ll simply have to rely on a few good concealers to help me achieve that flawless look.

Two such concealers are Kari Gran’s mineral concealer in ‘medium’ and Ilia Beauty’s just released liquid concealer in ‘maca’. I’ve been testing them for a bit now and have to say I’m pretty impressed with the performance of both.

ingredients: titanium dioxide, iron oxide, mica, zinc oxide

note: there’s quite a bit of debate over the safety of mica and titanium dioxide used in cosmetics and the effect it has on the body when inhaled.  Products that don’t use nano-sized titanium dioxide particles are ok however and thankfully Kari Gran falls into this group. With respects to mica, you have to assess your amount of exposure to determine if it’s really a hazard. Anything in large doses is counterproductive no matter how safe it is. Want a deeper scoop? texture & application: a little goes a long way so all you need to do is sprinkle a bit on to the back of your palm and then mix a drop of serum with a concealer brush (I like this one). You can make it thinner or thicker depending on the amount of serum used, but I like to keep mine on the thicker side and find one small drop is all I need (I used Kari’s essential serum).

Transformed into a cream concealer I deposit a bit under my eye and then gently pat into place with my ring finger. You can easily build coverage by depositing/dabbing a bit more at a time, but if you start out with a thicker consistency then one layer is really all you need.

performance: I don’t expect my makeup to last perfectly from sun-up to sun-down (and if it does for you then I’m pretty sure you’re a photo-shopped hologram), but if I can make it through the majority of the day then that’s a big win. For the most part this concealer stayed put and there was little pilling/creasing.

So far so good.

The only strike against it (for me personally) is that colour is a touch too yellow. Yellow does counteract a purplish hue however, but because I have a peach/rose skin tone I found I needed to mix in a salmon coloured cream blush to get just the right colour for me. You on the other hand may achieve perfect colour success so I can’t really fault the product on that point. I do however love the ability to control the texture and the fact that I’m delivering a dose of hydration (via the serum) when I apply it.

ingredients: aloe barbadensis leaf extract**, glycerin, water, sesame seed oil*, coconut oil*, glyceryl stearate, sunflower seed oil*, cetyl alcohol, behenyl olivate, green tea extract**, arnica montana leaf extract**, chondrus crispus extract, matricaria flower extract**, calendula officinalis flower extract**, sodium hyaluronate, tocopherol, allantoin, ethylhexylglycerin, phenethyl alcohol. *Certified Organic Ingredients. May Contain: Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxide (CI77491, CI77492, CI77499).

texture & application: slightly thin in texture I prefer to put a small amount on the back of my hand and then use my ring finger to deposit it under my eye. I find it dries quickly so building coverage is a snap as you don’t have to worry about messing up layer 1 when applying layer 2. The colour is a perfect match for me and one of the tricks I like to employ when I’m looking especially tired is to dab a bit of Kjaer Weis’ radiance highlighter on first.

performance: pretty freaking amazing. It didn’t crease and stayed in place for a good portion of the day. The important thing to note here is that I always keep my under eye area well hydrated. I can’t expect the painting to look perfect when the canvas is sub-standard.

Sample of Kari Gran mineral concealer was generously provided, but you know the drill all opinions blushing or not are my own.

  • I love Ilia, as you are probably well aware of and am also interested in trying some of their other new releases, like the Tinted Moisturizer and Strike It Up. In addition, Kari Gran sounds amazing! I definitely want to give both their skincare and makeup products a try.
