‘going green’ beauty tag

going green beauty tag!

Being called out to participate in a green beauty tag is always so much fun for me as it throws an element of the unexpected into my day. A green beauty tag is typically started by a green beauty blogger in order to get to know other bloggers better through a serious of questions. Tina of Our WonderLust recently tagged me to join in on the “Going Green” tag and share my experience of going natural.

Ok, here we go!

what started it all off for you?

jennifer lawrence long story

Nah, just kidding. What kicked it off for me is actually quite simple. My mom. She was a strong advocate for healthy living so the older I got, and the more I questioned the quality of ingredients I was putting on my skin, I reverted to my mom’s simplistic teachings of ‘getting back to basics’ to find a beauty regime that would not only maintain my skin health, but forever keep people guessing about my true age.

what was the first thing to go? (Ingredient or product)

My skin care products. First the cleanser, then the moisturizer and finally the scrubs and masks.  I didn’t have a moment where I yelled “throw it all out!!!” and biff my products off the balcony, but rather I replaced each one as I went through meticulous research finding the one that suited me just perfectly.

Having sites like EWG to refer to was key, but I also literally poured through many sites and articles about hundreds of ingredients to understand its true impact on me and the environment. Going green is a time investment, but think about your grandma or great-grandma -their generation had beautiful skin well into old age and it wasn’t because of Elizabeth Arden’s new time reversal cream.

what are you/did you struggle to let go of?

When you have quality brands like rms beauty, Kjaer Weis, Living Libations, Ilia BeautyMay Lindstrom and Province Apothecary it’s not hard to replace your entire skincare and makeup line, but the one item I am struggling to replace is a decent gel/liquid liner. I’ve tried Alima Pure’s black eyeliner powder, but found it didn’t give me the dramatic dark colour I want (although it’s still a very good option), so the next product up for testing is ZuZu Luxe’s liquid liner.

On a DIY note, as I was making black ink ristotto one day I was looking at the ink and wondering if I could turn it into an eyeliner!

what has been your best find or change? (i.e a green product or a tip that you’re really glad you’ve found/learnt)

  • Kjaer Weis cream blush ‘desired glow’ – click here for my review
  • May Lindstrom ‘the clean dirt’ – click here for my review
  • Living Libations ‘sea buckthorn shampoo’ & ‘shine on conditioner’ – click here for my review

what has been the worst thing about going green?

Knowing that it took me so long to get here – gawd I’ve used so many crap products on my skin!

But that being said, our world is not designed to make turning your life green easy (i.e. skincare, makeup, food, water, living space etc…) so if you have a favourite perfume  you just can’t let go of don’t beat yourself up. It’s what you do 80% of the time that counts.

anything else to add? any tips or tricks to pass on?

Rewilding your skincare and makeup is a choice and a complete green routine may not be for everyone. You should never feel guilty over the choices that make you the happiest because those that live in happiness turn out to be healthier than those that do everything perfectly. If you’re thinking about going green my only tip would be to do it at your own pace, otherwise it can seem overwhelming. Do your research, find out what works for you and if you need a place to start check out the Health Hut, Eco Diva Beauty and Clementine Fields for brands you don’t need to think twice about.

Good luck on your own journey!

LOVE. THIS. POST!! Anyone wanting to see the end of using toxics skin products has a wealth of options to choose from right here. A choice my generation never had. Why pay high prices to load your body (literally) with synthetic chemicals when alternatives are so easily found today? Now to get that message out!!
