birkenstocks: the new “it” shoe?

birkenstocks the new it shoe

I have to admit for years I shunned the very notion of birkenstocks, vehemently subscribing to the idea that they were a fall from fashion’s good graces….until the day I was traipsing around Europe and realized I could never be without them. I quietly admitted to myself that they were the most comfortable sandal I’d ever worn and even helped erase the pain I normally felt when wearing any other shoe (courtesy of being completely flat footed).

Leave it to the runway (Céline spring 2013 show) and Vogue to completely reinvent our perception of the birkenstock. No longer a ‘hippie shoe’ with an ugly silhouette, the birkenstock has been streamlined and pushed forward into a more chic realm with styles such as the gizeh and the larisa.

Whatever the style though there are a couple of rules I simply must impose when wearing them: pedicured toes are a must (polish not required if that’s not your lady jam) and they can’t look like they’ve been to desert many, many times over and back.

Blushers, what do you think of the newly styled birkenstocks? Do you own a pair or would you ever consider buying one? Leave me a comment and let me know!

      haha I do 😉

  • I’ve been wearing gizeh’s since 2006. No shame! Can’t live without them.

Hey Maria! those were the ones I wore on my travels as well – love them to bits! Thanks for saying hello, hope all is well lady! xx

Wow, Birkenstock really has stepped up their styles! Many years ago everyone seemed to have a pair (not just the hippies knew how to look after their feet!), so now perhaps comfort will be appreciated once again!
